Open Canoes

We have a small number of 'Canadian' open canoes for experienced paddlers.

1 or 2 adults in each canoe, plus one or two children depending on size.  The larger canoe can take 3 adults, depending on size and conditions.

These are proper, well-loved 'Old Town' canoes, professionally kitted out. We use them ourselves with our own friends and families and for guiding.  They perform better than cheaper 'hire-canoes' but take a little getting used to.  To hire them without a guide, you will need to demonstrate to us that you know how to handle a canoe, including being able to self-rescue.   We may ask for a British Canoeing quaification or endorsement from a club, college or other institution, and take a deposit.

 BOOKING FORM

Advance Booking is strongly recommended.  We get very busy in peak season and are usually fully booked. At quieter times of year, we don't set up our stand if we don't have any bookings in for the day.

Suggested itineraries:

Two hours is our minumum hire time which allows you to get somewhere and back, with a brief stop (stretch!).

Three hours allows you to go a little bit further or have a more decent stop, eg for a swim, explore, chill somewhere quiet, or have a drink in a pub. Riverside pubs can be found on Bow creek at the Malsters Arms, Tuckenhay (book over a high tide), or downriver at the Ferry Boat Inn, Dittisham (book over a low tide).

Up to six hours allows to you to really explore if you're feeling fit and super-adventurous, or time to eat in one of the pubs or cafes if you want to make an easier day of it.

We will talk to you on arrival to understand what you would ideally like to do and then come up with ideas that you can choose from depending on tidal and weather conditions.

If you're booking a big trip, or a novice group or anyone wanting a bit of guidance on the most suitable schedule, please call and we will gladly advise.  Please note we can be very busy on the quay at peak summer time so our phone time maybe limited.  The more you can book in advance, the easier it is for us to help you.

What we provide:

We provide you with paddles, buoyancy aids, a map and a dry bag to carry your own gear.

Buoyancy aids are provided to everyone going onto the water and must be worn at all times.

All under 18’s must be accompanied by an adult who must be able to swim 50m, and everyone must be comfortable around water.

What to Bring:

You will get a wet bum and wet feet, so having a change of clothing and towel makes stopping off at the pub or driving home more comfortable.

We do not provide paddle clothing so suggest you come dressed in shorts and non cotton t-shirt and hat if it's sunny, with sun cream and bottled water. If it's looking cooler or wet then we advise jogging bottoms, warm jumper, waterproofs or a wetsuit. Shoes that are grippy and you don’t mind getting muddy or wet are also essential. Having water or juice to drink whilst paddling and packed lunch is also good paddling practice and we provide dry bags for you to carry this in.

Any questions please don't be embarrassed to call, we would rather you came properly prepared for a great day out on the water!
