Canoe and Kayak Academy

Not sure how to start kayaking? or perhaps you paddled in your youth and want to start again, then we can help! Forget about having to capsize in the first five minutes and feeling wet and cold all day and come to our brand new clubhouse for a relaxed introduction.
Now based in brand new facilities!
The Stoke Gabriel Boating Association (SGBA) have due to some very generous donations and funding been able to build a brand new clubhouse right on the riverbank in Stoke Gabriel. In partnership with the SGBA we are now able to use the same building to run our Kayak Academy courses from. Once you have parked wander down to the point where we are able to offer you changing facilities, loos and showers! Then take in the spectacular river views from the training room/terrace before starting your course.
The Academy
The academy opens its doors in May once it warms up a bit! Offering courses for all abilities and interests. Over the last few years we had all sorts of requests from "We want to learn a bit about kayaking so we can take our family and friends out onto the water safely" to film crews and presenters.

For 2017 our popular evening BCU (British Canoe Union1 and 2 star personal kayaking skills is available. This is a formal course which takes you through a set of paddling skills which are recognised in any kayak/canoe centre. We think it's important to keep group numbers low which allows you to have lots of one to one tuition and we use only the best British Canoe Union qualified coaches available in the South West.

Due to lasts year excellent response we are continuing to offer our in house one day intro to kayaking course. This firstly takes you through an hour's theory session, over a cup of tea, looking at planning a kayak trip and the effect of weather, tides and paddling areas have. We then expand this to look at the kayaks and kayak clothing and specialised kit we use.
After getting kitted up we then we head out onto the water following our planned trip. During this we can help you improve your paddling skills (if any!) and show you how to put the theory covered earlier into practice as we head to a pub lunch or picnic! Then if you want we can cover rescues, before a well earned cuppa!
